Dr. Anthony Fauci, who became the face of the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 as he headed the White House coronavirus task force when President Donald Trump was in office says he would leave his position if the former president is re-elected in 2024.
Speaking with CNN on Sunday, Fauci laughed and said “no” when asked if he would keep his current post of chief White House medical adviser if Trump returns to the people’s house.
“If you look at the history of what the response was during the administration, I think, you know, at best, you can say it wasn’t optimal. And I think just, history will speak for itself about that,” he said, as Fox News reported.
Fauci, who headed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for decades before spearheading the Trump administration’s efforts to combat the COVID-19 virus, became notorious for his frequent flip-flopping and emphatic support for lockdowns, mask mandates, and later, aggressive vaccination campaigns.
This gained him quite a bit of partisan notoriety, particularly among Trump supporters, and he often clashed with the former president over pandemic protocol and treatments.
“People are tired of hearing Fauci and all these idiots, these people. Every time he goes on TV, there’s a bomb, but there’s a bigger bomb if you fire him,” Trump said shortly before the 2020 election.
When President Joe Biden was inaugurated in 2021, Fauci was made chief White House medical adviser and he said last year that it was “liberating” to work under the new president, as The Blaze noted this week.
“I can tell you I take no pleasure at all being in a situation of contradicting the president, so it was really something that you didn’t feel you could actually say something and there wouldn’t be any repercussions about it,” he said.
“The idea that you can get up here and talk about what you know, what the evidence and science is, and let the science speak – it is somewhat of a liberating feeling.”
