Here at Activist Mommy we consistently affirm the value of life.
This is why we denounce the unjust death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minnesota police officer last week.
The right to life is a God-given right that our Constitution was designed to affirm and protect, and Floyd was crudely robbed of this right by someone who had been entrusted with defending his rights.
Peaceful protest is another sacred right that our Constitution affirms and protects. But the right to peaceful protest ends as soon as said protest ceases to be peaceful.
There have been both peaceful protests and criminal riots that have erupted since Floyd’s death, as is often the case when an unarmed black man dies in police custody.
These incidents bring to mind our nation’s long history of racism and racial tension, but sadly, rioting and looting has not only not brought justice for George Floyd, it has also now robbed several other black Americans of their lives, creating all the more need for true justice.
These are their names and stories, via Breitbart.
Dave Patrick Underwood
Underwood, 53, was a federal officer who was shot and killed during riots in Oakland, California as he reportedly attempted to keep the peace.
His family, like Floyd’s is calling for an end to the violence.
“My brother, Dave Patrick Underwood, a federal officer, was murdered 5/29/20 in Oakland California, while on duty during the riots,” Underwood’s sister wrote on her Facebook page. “This Violence Must Stop.”
David Dorn
Retired St. Louis, Missouri police captain, 77-year-old David Dorn, was shot and killed by looters who broke into a pawn shop on the night of June 1st. The incident was allegedly streamed live on Facebook, including Dorn’s murder, but has since been taken down.
Italia Marie Kelly
22-year-old Italia Marie Kelly, who was biracial, was killed on the evening of May 31s when she was leaving a Davenport, Iowa protest. She had decided to leave when the originally peaceful protest gave way to a more unruly crowd.
As she was leaving, she was struck by a random bullet and died instantly.
“She was always smiling, always laughing,” Kelly’s aunt told the Associated Press. “That’s why it’s so sad that she was taken in such a violent way. That is not Italia. She was the bright, bubbly big personality in the room.”
David McAtee
53-year-old David McAtee was shot and killed in Louisville, Kentucky on June 1st. Police say they were clearing a crowd in the area when they heard gunshots and returned fire. McAtee was struck by a bullet and died. The incident is under investigation.
“We lost a wonderful citizen. David was a friend to many, a well-known barbecue man,” Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer told the Associated Press.
Chris Beaty
Former Indiana University football player Chris Beaty was shot and killed by rioters on a robbing spree on the night of May 30th in Indianapolis.
According to an eyewitness, Beaty had been trying to prevent two thieves from robbing two women of their purses.
“You don’t need to do this. There’s a better way,” he reportedly said, before the two thieves shot and killed him.
Say. Their. Names.
