The Biden administration last week issued documents detailing its guidelines for so-called “gender-affirming” healthcare for transgender youth, including puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgeries.

“Research demonstrates that gender-affirming care improves the mental health and overall well-being of gender diverse children and adolescents. Because gender-affirming care encompasses many facets of healthcare needs and support, it has been shown to increase positive outcomes for transgender and nonbinary children and adolescents,” a document from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Population Affairs reads.

“Gender-affirming care is patient-centered and treats individuals holistically, aligning their outward, physical traits with their gender identity,” it states.

In a chart detailing methods of “gender-affirming surgery,” “top” surgery is described as being done to “create male-typical chest shape or enhance breasts” while “bottom” surgery is performed on “genitals or reproductive organs. Facial feminization or other procedures.”

On the same day, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Child Traumatic Stress Network released a document titled “Gender-Affirming Care Is Trauma-Informed Care.”

“Gender-affirming care broadly refers to creating an environment that facilitates youth to move through the world safely as the gender they know themselves to be,” the document reads, adding that this “may include “evidence-based interventions such as puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones” as well as social transitioning.

As several states have passed or are considering legislation that would restrict transgender athletes from playing on female athletic teams or treatments legally available to transgender youth, the Biden administration has responded by criticizing such attacks on what it deems the most medically appropriate treatment for trans youth.

In a video, President Joe Biden vowed to fight states that restrict girls’ and women’s sports teams, which he said were “hateful” and “simply wrong” and that he is committed to “standing up for transgender equality in the classroom, on the playing field, at work, in our military, in our housing and health care systems – everywhere.”
