The Biden administration’s Health and Human Services Department has endorsed taxpayer-funded transgender surgeries for children in the latest example of the president’s committed pro-LGBT policy platform.
HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra issued the stance in a written response to Republican Rep. Mary Miller (IL) of the House Committee on Education and Labor last week.
The federal official was responding to a questions on whether the Biden administration believes that “taxpayers should pay for chemical castration and sex-change operations” and if “doctors should be forced to perform sex change operations on minor children without their parents’ consent.”
At least two states, namely California and Michigan, have moved to allow for so-called “gender-affirming” treatments, including surgery, without full parental consent.
Meanwhile, other states such as Tennessee and Florida are in the process of outright banning transgender surgeries and drugs for minors.
“The Department follows the law, and is working to ensure that all patients, everywhere can access care free from discrimination, stigma and barriers,” Becerra wrote to the Republican lawmaker.
“The Biden-Harris Administration supports the upcoming release of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care Version 8 and believes that all children and adults should be afforded life-saving, medically necessary care,” he continued.
“Payers, both public and private, should cover treatments which medical experts have determined to be medically necessary,” he wrote.
In a statement to The Daily Caller, Miller pointed out that Becerra also evaded answering a question directly as to whether or not doctors should be allowed to perform sex-change procedures on children without parental consent.
Becerra pointed to the “Gender Affirming Care and Young People” fact sheet from his department that had previously cemented the Biden administration’s official endorsement of gender transitions for children.
“Gender-affirming” care “consists of an array of services that may include medical, surgical, mental health and non-medical services for transgender and nonbinary people. Gender-affirming care is patient-centered and treats individuals holistically, aligning their outward, physical traits with their gender identity,” the document reads, as quoted by Becerra, who also stated merely that “gender affirming care is a supportive form of healthcare.”
“Biden’s HHS secretary has now confirmed that the Biden administration is using taxpayer dollars to push young children to have sex change operations and take dangerous chemicals that do permanent damage to their bodies,” Miller told The Daily Caller. “The Biden administration even supports allowing these procedures to occur without parental consent.”
In October, President Biden told transgender TikTok influencer Dylan Mulvaney in an interview that he does not believe states should be able to ban “gender-affirming” treatment for minors.
