As he plans to occupy the White House, projected president-elect Joe Biden reportedly plans to prioritize nationwide mask mandates to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
According to a newly-created Biden-Harris administration transition site, the impending administration will implement mandatory masking by working with governors. If any state’s executive office refuses to cooperate, however, Biden plans to work with mayors and county executives to develop masking requirements at the local level:
Implement mask mandates nationwide by working with governors and mayors and by asking the American people to do what they do best: step up in a time of crisis.
Experts agree that tens of thousands of lives can be saved if Americans wear masks. President-elect Biden will continue to call on:
Every American to wear a mask when they are around people outside their household.
Every Governor to make that mandatory in their state.
Local authorities to also make it mandatory to buttress their state orders.
Fox News medical contributor Dr. Marc Siegel critiqued Biden’s plan, noting that masks are “the icing on the physical distancing cake” and should be worn properly, but that a more punitive approach to mask-wearing may come with adverse effects.
“I think masks are quite useful, but they have a place and they’re not the be-all and end-all,” Siegel told the outlet. “I’m worried that mandating this with fines and such may actually lead to more of a rebellion against it.”
Siegel also undermined a one-size fits all mandate, arguing that it makes more sense to match mask usage to the actual risk of exposure to the coronavirus in each region.
Regarding social distancing, however, Biden plans to use a “dial” approach, determining the risk of spread using evidence-based guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
This move, Siegel suggests, could be a mistake.
“I don’t think social distancing is dial. I think masks are a dial,” he told Fox News. “Social distancing is something we should just be doing right now. You never know how much virus was in the community.”
“I think physical distancing is more important than masks,” Siegel declared. “If you’re 10 feet away from someone, you’re not going to get the virus. If you’re one foot away with a mask, you might.”
Folks, this is precisely what we have been warning about. It is not within the authority of the president—whomever he may be—to compel governors to violate their citizens’ bodily autonomy. We stand on a dangerous precipice here. Do not stop praying!!
