Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has formally broken up a commission on the promotion of religious freedom globally that was established under former President Donald Trump.

Blinken, a vocal proponent for LGBT rights, pointed to a disagreement with the manner in which the Trump-era State Department panel under former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had defined the importance of religious freedom.

The Commission on Unalienable Rights, The Christian Post explained, consisted of several experts formed in 2019 who argued in a report last year that religious liberty and property rights were more important than human rights.

At the time, Pompeo hailed the report as it, he said, “reorients us back to the foundational unalienable rights that we are bound to protect.”

“There is no hierarchy that makes some rights more important than others,” Blinken explained. “Past unbalanced statements that suggest such a hierarchy, including those offered by a recently disbanded State Department advisory committee, do not represent a guiding document for this administration.”

The commission’s findings received sharp backlash at the time from pro-abortion and pro-LGBT groups who considered them to have attempted to devalue “women’s rights” and LGBT rights.

However, at the time, Pompeo clarified that the panel was formed as “International institutions designed and built to protect human rights have drifted from their original mission.”

Indeed, many would argue there could be no human rights at all without religious rights, if one looks at the trajectory of Western philosophical thought on human rights.

Blinken, however, says the new administration is “decisively” committed to pushing back against the former administration’s assertions.

“At my confirmation hearing, I promised that the Biden-Harris administration would repudiate those unbalanced views [of the previous administration],” he said. “We do so decisively today.”

The concept of religious freedom as a whole is something that has been devalued in importance among many modern progressives as religious freedom increasingly is found to be at odds with LGBT protections and efforts to promote pro-abortion policies.
