Bill To Set Up Taxpayer-Funded Grant For Children’s Hormones, Adult Surgery Advances Through CA Legislature

The California Assembly has passed a bill that would establish a taxpayer-funded grant to aid in the “transitioning” of minors and adults with dangerous cross-sex hormones and surgery.

According to a press release issued yesterday by the California Family Council, the assembly approved the Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund of AB 2218 “without hesitation or debate.”

The bill, authored by Assemblyman Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles), would provide grants to nonprofits, hospitals, clinics (including Planned Parenthood), and other medical providers that supply puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for minors, as well as cross-sex hormones and “sex-change” operations for adults.

The bill originally asked for $15 million to start the fund, but that amount was recently stricken. Now, CFC reports, the exact amount added to the fund will be decided by the legislature at a later date.

Even in California, the bill is not without its staunch opponents, such as Dr. Quentin Van Meter, a board-certified pediatric endocrinologist who testified against AB 2218 in the Assembly Health Committee.

In his letter in opposition to the bill sent to the Assembly back in May, Van Meter warned that studies have demonstrated that “significant mental health issues” persist in children even after hormone therapy.

Van Meter also warned that he could “clearly predict firestorm of legal ramifications of hasty affirmation” for vulnerable, gender-confused children because they destroy healthy body tissue, sterilize the recipient, and cause irreversible damage.

“First, I will state emphatically that as a licensed, board-certified Pediatric Endocrinologist, my pre-eminent concern is to protect the lives and welfare of all children. Children who are struggling with an incongruent gender identity are clearly suffering greatly,” Van Meter wrote.

“Biological bedrock science proves that human beings are binary sexual beings with complementary anatomy that is intended to facilitate procreation,” he went on. “Religious beliefs elevate this concept to a divine level, but do not in any way conflict with science, and therefore, I will stick to science. Biological males are and always will be males and biologic females are and will always be biologic females, regardless of the social role they choose to play in life.”

“The appearance of wide acceptance of the Endocrine Society Guidelines for transgender care is a carefully crafted illusion,” Van Meter warned. “There is a mounting response by endocrinologists, bioethicists, and activists in the gay community to burst this illusion and to return medical care to focus clearly and steadily on the real issue of mental health.”

“I personally and professionally intend to do nothing that will harm a child or adolescent, or any human, for that matter. Having practiced endocrinology for the past forty years, I can clearly predict the firestorm of legal ramifications of hasty affirmation,” Van Meter warned. “The damaged lives of the adults who have awakened from the drug-and-surgically-induced “calm” are testimony to the hell that is caused by affirmation of an incongruent gender. The temporary 10-15 year euphoria is widely touted as the proof of the benefits of affirmation interventions. Padding the lives of these suffering individuals with funds to create a false sense of security is unconscionable.”
