The unexpected boost of free time during quarantining coupled with the phenomenon of panic-buying and toilet paper hoarding amid the novel coronavirus pandemic has birthed a hilarious and uplifting new trend: toilet paper cakes.

Profiled by Todd Starnes, New Orleans-based Haydel’s Bakery is selling homemade cakes “designed to look like one of the most prized possessions in this post-virus world.”

“It’s just anytime something in the city happens, we’ve garnered the reputation for making light of bad situations,” co-owner David Haydel told the Times-Picayune. “We made a couple of them as a joke a couple of days ago and they sold immediately. Then 10 more were snapped up the next day.”

“Haydel’s Bakery has been through many trials and tribulations over the past 61 years. We survived Hurricanes Betsy and Katrina. We will survive this virus as well,” the bakery said in a Facebook post.

While businesses like Haydel’s have been hit with orders to serve their customers via takeout only, many home bakers have picked up on the trend as well.

We’ve stockpiled enough toilet paper that we’ve started eating it. 😂 Who wants to come take some away? #toiletpaper…
