First Pro-Trump Democrat Retracts Resignation Amid “Bigoted” Harassment For 2020 Endorsement

A Democratic lawmaker in Georgia who came under attack by his own party for endorsing President Donald Trump has reversed his decision to resign after receiving an outpouring of support.

Rep. Vernon Jones (D-Lithonia) drew tremendous ire from his party last week when he announced his endorsement, citing Trump’s support for criminal justice reform and historically black colleges and universities.

Jones’ boldness and independent thought were heavily punished by his fellow Democrats, however. According to Life News, many retaliated by announcing their support for Rhonda Taylor, a community activist running for Jones’ seat in the state’s upcoming Democratic primary.

“Vernon Jones is an embarrassment to the Democratic Party and does not stand for our values,” Georgia Democratic Party Chairwoman Nikema Williams said in a prepared statement. “He chose to stand with the racist president who has made an all-out assault on black Americans … during the most important election of our lifetimes.”

In a conference call with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, three top Dem leaders in the Georgia House announced that they’d be donating to Taylor. House Minority Leader Bob Trammell said he is “sending her a check immediately.”

“We’re not sure what was on Vernon’s mind. It’s antithetical to what we believe in,” said state Rep. James Beverly (D-Macon), the chairman of the party’s House caucus. “We can’t support an ideology that’s diametrically opposed to who we are and what we value.”

The overwhelming backlash from his party initially pushed Jones to announce his resignation just a few days after his endorsement of the president.

“I’m sick and tired of me and my family being attacked and harassed by the Democrat Party for putting my country before my party,” Jones said in a statement, according to the Journal-Constitution.

“I take pride in being an independent thinker,” Jones continued. “I intend to help the Democrat Party get rid of its bigotry against Black people that are independent and conservative.”

In a tweet on Thursday morning, Jones accused others in his party of acting like “the bigots they claim to hate.”

“The way the Democrat Party has treated me this past week has made one thing clear: they are the bigots they claim to hate and I won’t be silent about it,” he said. “I will continue to let the Democratic Party know that the bigotry within this party is hurting African-Americans — and more and more African-Americans are thinking independently.”

Later that day, however, Jones announced that he would no longer be resigning after having received tremendous support and encouragement to stay the course.

“Yesterday, I announced my intentions to resign from my office,” said Jones. “But shortly thereafter, the outpour of support I received was too great for me to ignore. I will not allow the Democrats to bully me into submission. I will not let them win. I will NOT resign.”

Among many to congratulate Rep. Jones for his decision to stay in office was Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who thanked Jones for “demonstrating the courage of your convictions.”

We congratulate Rep. Jones for having the boldness to stand up to Democrat gatekeepers and thought police. The hideously corrupt party is long overdue for a healthy dose of introspective honesty, and Jones is ready to administer it.
