A high school teacher in a suburb of Tampa, Florida is facing felony child abuse charges after allegedly spraying certain students with disinfectant when they did not wear their masks properly in class.

In an effort to curb the spread of coronavirus, all Pinellas County schools require students and staff to wear face masks and maintain 6-foot social distancing.

According to WFLA-TV, Largo High School teacher Christina Reszetar became agitated when four of her students refused to wear their masks correctly. The 51-year-old teacher then allegedly sprayed the faces and bodies of those students with aerosol disinfectant.

Reszetar was escorted from the Largo High School by the Largo Police Department and booked into the Pinellas County jail on Wednesday. Reszetar was charged with four counts of felony child abuse with great bodily harm.

In her Thursday courtroom appearance, WFLA-TV reports that Reszetar told the judge she teaches Learning Disabled Math at Largo High School and has been a teacher for 21 years, 18 of them at Largo High School.

“I think I can fairly characterize this as a severely misguided attempt at discipline,” the judge said in court on Thursday.

The judge also asked Reszetar, “Are you going to be able to hire a lawyer to represent you?” She responded, “I will not be able to afford one on my teacher’s salary.”

The spraying incident was reportedly captured on surveillance video, but police have not released the footage to the public. Reszetar, however, claimed in court that the video would show that she is innocent.

With no prior criminal record, Reszetar was released from Pinellas County Jail on Thursday night without bond. A Pinellas County School District spokeswoman told WFLA-TV that Reszetar is still employed with the school district at this time.

The Blaze notes that this is hardly the first time a public school teacher has lost their cool over the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in December, the outlet reported that an Oregon teacher directed a vulgar tantrum at anti-lockdown protesters in the town of Bend.

The yet-unidentified teacher in question was recorded cursing out the peaceful protesters from her vehicle, shouting “B****! Kill yourself!” and “I’m a f***ing teacher! I work in schools… F**** you! I teach students!”

The woman did indeed turn out to be a teacher in nearby Jefferson County School District 509-J; the administration of which promptly suspended her pending an investigation.
