Last week, Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis hit back at Disney CEO Bob Chapek after the latter criticized the controversial Parental Rights in Education bill, which has been misleadingly dubbed the “don’t say gay bill” by opponents.
The legislation, which was passed by the state Senate last week, seeks to limit topics that teachers can discuss with children third grade and under, particularly as relates to gender and sexual identity. LGBTQ+ activists and progressives take issue with what they claim is discrimination, parental rights advocates applaud the bill’s aim to empower parents to have more control over what their children are learning in school.
Earlier in the week, Newsmax reported, Chapek told investors that he had spoken with DeSantis and expressed Disney’s “disappointment and concern” that if the bill is signed into law, it could “be used to unfairly target gay, lesbian, nonbinary and transgender kids and families.”
Disney World Orlando is Disney’s largest amusement park and grosses over $7 billion annually in admission revenue alone, according to Gaming Section.
DeSantis told Fox News that a company that primarily appeals to families ought to understand why parents are concerned about what their children are learning in school.
“When you have companies that have made a fortune off being family-friendly and catering to families and young kids, they should understand that parents of young kids do not want this injected into their kid’s kindergarten classroom,” he said.
“You have companies, like at Disney, that are going to say and criticize parents’ rights, they’re going to criticize the fact that we don’t want transgenderism in kindergarten in first-grade classrooms,” the governor continued.
“If that’s the hill they’re going to die on, then how do they possibly explain lining their pockets with their relationship from the Communist Party of China? Because that’s what they do, and they make a fortune, and they don’t say a word about the really brutal practices that you see over there at the hands of the CCP.
“And so in Florida, our policies got to be based on the best interest of Florida citizens, not on the musing of woke corporations,” DeSantis added.
