House Democrats Introduce Bill to Bar Federal Monuments to Any “Twice Impeached” Former POTUS

During the course of President Donald Trump’s time in the White House, it was often joked in right-wing circles that those who opposed him seemed to be developing what we’ve since coined “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

TDS, it seems, has not dissipated even now that the controversial former POTUS has left office.

He’s still a former POTUS, and that’s just too much for some of his most ardent political opponents, as the Western Journal reports.

California Rep. Linda Sánchez (D) introduced the “No Glory for Hate Act” last month, which was signed by 13 Democratic co-sponsors and passive-aggressively dictates that “any former President that has been twice impeached by the House of Representatives” may not receive any honor in the form of anything federally funded.

They may as well have added, “nor any past presidents of the color orange.”

“[N]o Federal funds may be used to create or display any symbol, monument, or statue commemorating any former President that has been twice impeached by the House of Representatives on or before the date of enactment of this Act or has been convicted of a State or Federal crime relating to actions taken in an official capacity as President of the United States on Federal public land, including any highway, park, subway, Federal building, military installation, street, or other Federal property,” the bill, written by Democrats with very selective outrage over when federal funds are appropriately spent.

The bill would also forbid one to “name, designate, or redesignate a Federal building or Federal land after, or in commemoration of, any former President that has been twice impeached by the House of Representatives on or before the date of enactment of this Act or has been convicted of a State or Federal crime relating to actions taken in an official capacity as President of the United States.”

As if they couldn’t go any lower, the bill also seeks to prevent any “twice impeached” president who shall remain nameless from being buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Yes, really.

“In carrying out paragraphs (1) and (2), the Secretary of Defense shall not approve a determination of eligibility for interment or inurnment in Arlington National Cemetery made by the Secretary of the Army that permits the interment or inurnment in Arlington National Cemetery of any former President that has been twice impeached by the House of Representatives on or before the date of enactment of this Act or has been convicted of a State or Federal crime relating to actions taken in an official capacity as President of the United States,” the amendment reads.

This is a rather odd amendment considering, as WJ notes, only two presidents have been laid to rest in the sacred military resting grounds: “John F. Kennedy, who served in the Naval Reserve during World War II, and William Howard Taft, who was Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary of war.”

Considering the location of such a former president’s burial is of consequence in this bill takes a particularly bitter note considering it also would strip him of Secret Service protection.

Just in case you were worried it didn’t go low enough.

“We should never glorify the hatred Donald Trump personified as President. This bill ensures that there is no glory for hate — not a building, statue, or even a park bench,” Rep. Sánchez said in a statement.

“Even though Trump is no longer in office, he should still be held accountable for his actions and the taxpayers should not foot the bill for his future actions,” she added.

It’s pretty amazing that the same Democrats who ran under the pretense that our nation was teetering on the brink of chaos should we not expel Trump from the White House seem to have, in less than two months, apparently solved so many problems they’ve found time to write absurdly bitter legislation like this.

To say nothing of the fact that, were it to manage to pass the Senate’s very narrow Democratic majority, at the rate our nation is going now, there could easily be a thrice-impeached Democrat president down the road who, if you’ll forgive them mixed metaphor, could end up the unhappy recipient of what happens when the political weaponization of impeachment ends up on the other foot.

Are they really so determined to smear his legacy, or can we move on from this bitter nonsense?

So much for “unity.”
