Over the last few months, we have brought to your attention several chilling accounts of women and children being exploited through the website OnlyFans.
The platform, which exploded in popularity amid the pandemic, enables content creators to easily offer monetized content for their followers and, as it allows for sexually explicit content, has quickly turned into a hotbed of homemade, highly lucrative pornography.
However, as we have reported this year, authorities in the UK (which is where OnlyFans is based) have found a disturbingly high number of instances where minors easily accessed the website and were able to create and monetize their own explicit content — sometimes under the coercive pressure of depraved fans who threatened to expose them to their parents should they cease making content.
There have also been instances of trafficked women being forced to perform on OnlyFans for the sake of making money for a third party, and, similar to PornHub, there have also been cases of missing children turning up in the virtual red-light district.
This is all grievous — yet far from surprising, as pornography so frequently and easily leads to exploitation and abuse, something over which the world’s largest purveyor of pornography, PornHub, has faced increasing criticism itself.
And while at this moment PornHub is still fully operational despite public scrutiny and even being dropped my major payment providers, OnlyFans has buckled to pressure and will be banning pornography starting in October.
Folks, this is a huge victory for morality and internet security!
OnlyFans, which has amassed a base of more than 130 million users largely for adult-oriented subscription fan pages, announced that it will ban sexually explicit content this fall.
The U.K.-based company said it is making the changes “to comply with the requests of our banking partners and payout providers,” in a statement provided to Variety.
Effective Oct. 1, 2021, “OnlyFans will prohibit the posting of any content containing sexually explicit conduct,” the company said in a statement. “In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines.”
The company says they will continue to allow content that contains nudity “as long as it is consistent with our Acceptable Use Policy,” which currently allow for nudity unless it involves public nudity which is recorded in a jurisdiction where it is illegal.
“We will be sharing more details in the coming days, and we will actively support and guide our creators through this change in content guidelines,” the company also said. “OnlyFans remains committed to the highest levels of safety and content moderation of any social platform. All creators are verified prior to being able to upload any content to OnlyFans, and all uploaded content is checked by automated systems and human moderators.”
It is pretty extraordinary for a company that has made so much money off content creators who share explicit content to reverse course on this income source, and speaks volumes about the power of public opinion.
Our world is full of companies engaged in wicked practices and sometimes it can feel like David and Goliath standing up to them.
But we all know who won that famed biblical battle — never underestimate your capacity to do battle when you’re fighting on the side of what is right.
