Kirk Cameron Denied Story Hour for Faith-Inspired Book by Libraries Hosting Drag Queen Events

Actor Kirk Cameron and his faith-oriented children’s book have been turned down by multiple public libraries for a story hour event when the same libraries have hosted drag queen story hours and similar events.

Over 50 public libraries have turned down a request from Cameron’s publisher, Brave Books, to host a reading of the book, As You Grow, a story of faith, family, and biblical wisdom.

(Disclosure: Brave Books is also the publisher of Elizabeth Johnston’s pro-life children’s book, Little Lives Matter.)

Fox News notes that such an event is routine for public libraries upon the release of a new children’s book, and one would imagine that former teen star Cameron’s name alone would seem to make scheduling a breeze.

However, dozens of libraries have either declined or failed to respond to the offer to host an “As You Grow” story hour while drag queen and other LGBT-affirming events for children have been favored by many of them.

“We are a very queer-friendly library. Our messaging does not align,” one library staffer bluntly told Brave Books.

This same library indeed hosts a regular “Queer Umbrella” event which serves as “a club and safe space where teens can learn, discuss and connect over queer history, art, community resources, and more.”

The event is open to ” all members of the LGBTQ+ community who are 12+.”

“I don’t think that’s something that we would do,” a San Diego library employee told Brave Books. “Because of how diverse our community is, I don’t know how many people you would get.”

One imagines how diverse a place can be if no one would be interested in Cameron’s book.

“I’m really sorry, but we are not interested,” said a worker from a Bay Area branch library which also hosts an “Every Month is Pride” series.

This same library also hosts a “teen queer book club,” according to Fox, and aims at “Telling our stories, highlighting the rich diversity … Those themes that are so important of love, acceptance and inclusion and seeing yourself represented in the books that are reading.”

Unfortunately, it sounds like any conservative, Christian children who patronize this branch library will see themselves represented in the books read during story hour events.

Meanwhile, while an Indiana library emphasized that they were more likely to promote authors of color for the sake of “racial equity,” a New York library told Brave Books simply, “Thank you for thinking of us, but we are not interested in this program.”

“We have not been approved for a single book reading of ‘As You Grow’ from any library yet,” Brave Books told Fox.

“It is devastating to discover that many of our publicly funded libraries have now become indoctrination centers that refuse to allow biblical wisdom to be taught to our children,” said CEO Trent Talbot in a statement.

“The woke left understands that morality is instilled by the age of 10, and they want their morality to win, not the morality that the Bible teaches.”

As You Grow” is a story for children that “teaches biblical wisdom and the value of producing the fruit of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control.”

This is well in line with Brave Books’ selection of principled children’s books to combat the prevailing trends in our culture. Make sure to check out “Little Lives Matter” too if you haven’t already!
