The incident occurred at a Starbucks located inside of a Target, where it is a licensee of the retail giant. So the employees who could have been behind the incident would actually be Target employees.
Fox 11 says that the officer was not in uniform at the time he made the purchase, but that he used his police credit union debit card to purchase the beverage.
The station was told that the officer went back inside the Starbucks to confront the staff once he discovered the tampon, and gave them back the cup.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that they took a report of the incident and are now investigating.
“Walnut Station Detectives are investigating an incident of alleged poisoning of food or drink at a local business. The incident was reported to have occurred Friday, June 19, 2020 at approximately 2:30 p.m., on the 700 block of Grand Avenue in the city of Diamond Bar. The victim was a male White 36 years-old. This is an ongoing investigation. No further information is available at this time,” they said in a statement on Tuesday morning.
“This disgusting assault on a police officer was carried out by someone with hatred in their heart and who lacks human decency. We hope they are publicly exposed, fired, arrested, and prosecuted for their cowardly and repugnant actions,” the LA Police Protective League told Fox 11.
LASD detectives have pulled surveillance video of the alleged incident and are now reviewing it.
Target is expected to issue a statement on Tuesday.
Fox 11 reports that when they called the Target, a female employee said that she was aware of the incident, but believed it to have taken place at a different location.
