Some LGBT activists in the U.K. are concerned that the popular video-sharing app TikTok is influencing children to pursue trans treatments and surgeries with widely-viewed videos which portray gender transition as glamorous and cool.
TikTok, the Chinese-owned company that is closely linked to the communist regime in Beijing, recently partnered with a controversial LGBT group, Stonewall, to promote #Trans content on the platform.
According to The Daily Mail, videos with the hashtag #Trans have been viewed 26 billion times.
Many popular British influencers have brought their followers along with their transition treatment, such as taking drugs or undergoing surgery.
One video cited by the U.K. outlet begins with the text, “I used to be a good Christian kid,” before showing a conversion into a “trans, gay atheist who loves tattoos and chaos.”
“Our major concern is that millions of impressionable children are watching these online influencers,” said Kate Harris of the LGB Alliance, which The Christian Post describes as group of dissident LBGT people who oppose trans ideology and Stonewall’s brand of activism.
“It’s no coincidence that the growth of TikTok coincides exactly with the exponential growth of children presenting with gender dysphoria,” she adds.
Harris points to an ongoing theme in TikTok’s trans content: the message “Don’t involve your parents.”
“What these videos would lead a generation of children to believe is that it is easy to change sex and that it is the answer to all of your problems,” she warns.
Stephanie Arai-Davies of Transgender Trend, a group which advocates for more evidence-based healthcare for children with gender dysphoria, told the Mail that Tik Tok is “hugely influential and it’s full of videos that portray medical transition as cool and edgy.”
“Gender is seen as the new rebellion,” she says. Arai-Davies also argues that content involving transgender treatments should be treated with more discretion.
“These social media platforms that promote medical transition should be made to include a warning on such material,” she argues.
