Prominent pro-life activist Lila Rose held her own during an appearance on the Dr. Phil show this week, calmly and clearly outlining the moral case against abortion even when outnumbered by pro-abortion advocates.
“Our fundamental human right that we all share in this room is life,” she calmly explained when confronted with an emotional audience member arguing against abortion bans. “It’s the first human right. Laws are meant to protect the weak. In a society, who’s the weakest? Who’s the weakest in society? A child. They don’t have a voice, they can’t speak.”
“Whether we live 10 minutes, 10 years, or 100 years, you’re a human life, and you have the right to not be killed,” she explained. “And that’s what the pro-life fight is all about. That’s what we’re fighting for.”
Rose had been responding to a member of the audience who was tearfully condemning her for supporting laws that would have prevented a 10-year-old rape victim from getting an abortion.
“Lila, your views — you just want to legislate evil,” the woman told Rose. “That’s really how it feels when you speak … I think you’re a traitor to your own.”
“There is nothing you could possibly say to justify that level of lack of empathy,” she said. “We were founded on the lack of empathy, and we’ve just kept up on that tradition.”
Rose responded by arguing that abortion is not the answer to helping victims of sexual assault.
“Abortion is devastating to women’s mental health,” she replied. “No one talks about that … The trauma is from the rape. The child is an innocent party there.”
The woman replied that the child doesn’t exist yet, as it hasn’t been born.
Rose replied by emphasizing the value of human life, from conception to the womb.
“Our fundamental human right that we all share in this room is life,” she explained. “It’s the first human right. Laws are meant to protect the weak. In a society, who’s the weakest? Who’s the weakest in society? A child. They don’t have a voice, they can’t speak.”

Dr. Phil also challenged Rose on the point at which life begins in the womb, arguing that there is no “consensus” within the scientific community on this point.
“There is Dr. Phil, 96% of scientists say that begins at fertilization–,” Rose replied, before the celebrity doctor spoke over her.
“No, actually there’s not–,” Dr. Phil replied, before Rose continued, “If you’re an in-vitro specialist you’re looking to create a single cell embryo, then you know you have a human life, so it is a scientific fact.”
The two argued the point for a moment, with Rose challenging the host at one point with the question, “In an abortion if it’s not a human life why do you have to kill it?”
An apparently flustered Dr. Phil replied, “I haven’t spoken over you, and you keep speaking over me and I assume that’s because you don’t want me to finish my though which is if anyone here wants to fact-check me instead of speak over me, you can go to the scientific literature and query what the definition is of the beginning of life, and you will find that there are different definitions.”
Fox News pointed to the survey that Rose was most likely referring to, which found that “96% of the 5,577 biologists from 1,058 academic institutions surveyed affirmed that a human’s life begins at fertilization. Furthermore, 85% of the 5,577 biologists self-identified as pro-choice, 89% self-identified as liberal, and 95% claimed that they held a Ph.D.”

Rose, the founder and president of Live Action Network who has been a voice in the movement against abortion since she was a teenager, was mostly presented with arguments for abortion that centered around extreme cases of fetal anomalies and child rape, as the activist noted on Twitter after the program.
“Dr. Phil’s team chose to center the entire show around an extremely tragic case of a mother whose baby had a fetal anomaly that was life threatening,” she wrote. “They made the focus of the episode her story, that she was ‘forced’ to birth the baby instead of abort because of pro-life laws.”
“Carry my baby to bury my baby,” was the line used. What they never acknowledged is that abortion kills a baby and that the baby would still need to be buried – or thrown away in medical waste. The reality is abortion doesn’t solve or heal or any problem— it only kills a baby.

Special care should also be offered to the mother and grieving family.
Killing the baby before he or she dies naturally is never the solution. It violates the fundamental principle of medicine – to heal, or provide comfort, never to harm.

“In cases of life-threatening conditions for preborn children, perinatal palliative care and hospice care can be offered to the baby so that if they pass in utero or shortly after birth, they have the best medical care and are treated with dignity,” she also noted. “Special care should also be offered to the mother and grieving family.
