Lubbock Planned Parenthood Stops Abortions After City Becomes “Sanctuary for the Unborn”

In June 1, the city of Lubbock, Texas’ “Sanctuary City for the Unborn” ordinance went into effect, making abortion illegal within city limits and forcing the local Planned Parenthood to stop providing abortions.

While Lubbock went without a Planned Parenthood between 2013 and 2020 after a previous facility closed, its reopening prompted the push to establish sanctuary city status for the unborn.

The facility began providing abortions in April.

On Tuesday, LifeNews reported, Right to Life of East Texas’ director and founder of the Sanctuary Cities for the Unborn initiative, Mark Lee Dickson, confirmed that Planned Parenthood is obeying the city’s new law, which was passed after a May 1 election to the chagrin of local and national pro-life activists alike.

“Planned Parenthood is wise for ceasing to do abortions in Lubbock,” Dickson LifeNews. “We are looking forward to see other cities throughout Texas do what is necessary to protect their cities from abortions taking place within their city limits. Right now, we are seeing much interest in Centerville, San Angelo and Tyler, and we are hopeful to see these and other cities outlaw abortion in the future.”

The abortion provider said in a statement that they will stop providing abortions until it is “legally permissible” to do so, complaining that the ordinance “violates” Lubbock residents’ “right” to end the life of unborn children and forces a “need” to travel out of town to do so.

“The ban on abortion violates patients’ constitutional right to an abortion, and we’re in court to block this ban for Lubbock patients,” the organization’s statement read. “The Lubbock abortion ban creates significant barriers and the need to travel a minimum 600-mile round trip or out of state for patients seeking to obtain an abortion.”

Last week, Planned Parenthood asked a federal judge to prevent the ordinance from being enforced, but a ruling has not yet been made on this request, according to KJTV 34.

When Lubbock passed its ordinance last month it became the first city to become a Sanctuary City for the Unborn with an active abortion clinic and the largest city in the country to ban abortion.

This means that, as its Planned Parenthood stops abortions, it has also become the first sanctuary city ordinance that has effectively ended abortions in the city. Praise God! This is just how we can take back a culture of life and truly end abortion, once and for all.
