This is a story that will make you cringe. Imagine making an active decision to remove flags to honor those have served their country honorably and were lost in action or captured by enemy forces to replace them with anything, let alone such a highly-charged social issue.
Can we not all agree as Americans anymore to honor our POW/MIA military members?
It’s insane.
Recently, many Democratic lawmakers in Washington D.C. replaced POW/MIA flags outside their Capitol Hill offices with Transgender Equality flags.
Yes, you read that right.
This was done the last week of March at the prompting of the “National Center for Transgender Equality” to honor “Trans Visibility Week.” In a tweet, the group said they had delivered a flag to every member of Congress, including Republicans, and had asked that they fly the flags outside their offices.
While some Democrats displayed the flags alongside the POW/MIA flags, others replaced the POW/MIA flags in lieu of the Transgender Equality flags.
Senator Bernie Sanders, I-VT, posted a picture of the flag outside his office with the commentary, “Discrimination has no place in our society. I am proud to display this flag as a symbol of my support for transgender people across the country. We must stand with transgender people in all of our community.”
Rep. Kim Schrier, D-Wash., was one of the many Congress members to post a picture of the transgender pride flag as a replacement for the POW/MIA flag. That week Schrier tweeted, “As a proud member of the @LGBTEqCaucus I will do everything I can to make sure transgender people #WontBeErased by violence, fear, or prejudice. I am committed to safety and equality for all. #TransVisibilityWeek.”
Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., decided to display the transgender equality flag alongside the POW/MIA flag.
The display of the flags came alongside the House’s censure on Trump’s move to ban transgender people from serving in the military. The non-binding resolution that opposed the ban passed 238-185. Nearly along party lines, only five Republicans joined the Democrats against the ban. The policy denies people from enlisting in the military who have undergone gender transition and also requires military personnel to serve as their biological, birth gender.
Rep. Joe Kennedy, D-Mass., says the policy was “targeted discrimination.” Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., who sits as an Armed Services Chair, said the policy is “primarily based on ignorance and bias against the transgender community.”
From the floor, Nancy Pelosi spoke in favor of the resolution, saying, “There is no moral justification for this ban which violates every value of our American democracy.”
Those who suffer from gender dysphoria or otherwise claim to be a member of the opposite sex have the same rights as all other Americans which allows them to live in a way that is in accordance with their own moral conscience. In fact, many would say they have immense privileges, particularly to infringe on the rights of others.
Making laws to protect and encourage gender dysphoria actually infringes on the rights of fellow Americans to live according to their own moral and religious convictions by forcing cooperation where their convictions are violated.
And to shove aside an important national symbol honoring prisoners of war or those missing in action is beyond abhorrent.
Is this really where we’re at as a nation?
