Residents of a predominantly Muslim neighborhood in Minneapolis, Minnesota which is part of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s district can now hear a public call to prayer broadcast five times a day from a mosque during Ramadan.

According to The Washington Examiner, the Dar al Hijrah mosque was granted a permit by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to broadcast the “adhan” from loudspeakers on its roof when the Islamic holy month began last Thursday.

In stark contrast to what one might imagine would happen if prayer to the triune God of the Bible were broadcast in any American city, Qatari-run media outlet Al Jazeera praised the move as “historic.”

“While the adhan is commonly broadcast throughout the Middle East, North Africa and other places, for many Muslims in the US, it is only heard inside mosques or community centres,” the outlet reported, noting that it was the first time a U.S. city had publicly broadcasted the prayer.

“There’s definitely a lot of excitement,” said Imam Abdisalam Adam, a board member of the Dar al Hijrah mosque.

“Tonight’s historic call to prayer in Minneapolis will bring comfort and remind the faithful and the neighborhood that as we are physically distant we can still be connected to our faith and mosque,” said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

The adhan is to be recited by different representatives from mosques around the city.

Hussein told Al Jazeera that the community had discussed broadcasting the adhan for years but was finally pushed to do so when the coronavirus pandemic forced mosques to shut their doors.

“We wanted to touch those individuals who frequent this mosque and this community,” Hussein said. “If we cannot be physically together, at least this echo, this voice, this call to prayer can be an extension of us being together at this difficult time. To give some people some solace.”

As the Examiner points out, Minneapolis is a hub for Somali immigrants and refugees, including Rep. Omar herself. An estimated 69,000 Somalis reside in the city, more than anywhere else in the nation.

While the adhan is recited in Arabic, its English translation is as follows:

Allah is Great! Allah is Great! Allah is Great! Allah is Great!
I bear witness that there is no god except the One Allah.
I bear witness that there is no god except the One Allah.
I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.
I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.
Hurry to the prayer. Hurry to the prayer.
Hurry to salvation. Hurry to salvation.
Allah is Great! Allah is Great!
There is no god except the One Allah.

Can you imagine if Christian churches so boldly declared the name of Christ in a major US city?
