Nazareth Mayor Angry About Trump Recognizing Jerusalem, Tries To Cancel Christmas

While many conservatives and other Israel supporters around the world are absolutely thrilled with President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, not everyone is thrilled about it, including the mayor of Nazareth.

In fact, the mayor was so unhappy with the announcement he actually tried to cancel Christmas celebrations in the area, which, given how much the city of Nazareth relies on money from tourists during the Christmas season, seems like a horrible idea.

After all, the only people you’re hurting here are the citizens of Nazareth and the economy that relies on this industry for survival.

According to One For Israel:

The mayor explained to The Times of Israel that his decision was in response to President Donald Trump’s recent announcement that the United States officially recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and will move the American embassy to Jerusalem. The mayor told the paper, “The decision [by Donald Trump regarding Jerusalem] has taken away the joy of the holiday, and we will thus cancel the festivities this year.”

On Saturday, Mayor Ali Sallam recanted on his decision, and instead said that the cancellation would only apply to artistic performances on stages. Outdoor stalls will remain, the lighting of the Christmas tree will take place on Sunday as scheduled, programs in the Old City will proceed, and a parade will be held on December 23.

What the media isn’t reporting about Mayor Sallam is that he is a Sunni Muslim and that nearly 70 percent of Nazareth’s population is Muslim, therefore, it’s likely the outrage is due to their own personally held belief that Muslims ought to be in control of Jerusalem.

Regardless, Sallam made the right call by opting to walk back his attempt to cancel Christmas, as doing so would leave his community damaged economically, and that’s probably not something that area can really afford at this moment.

How strange would it have been to have Christmas cancelled in the city of Jesus’ birth, especially over Jerusalem being named the nation’s capital?

A lot of Muslims are upset over Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem because they believe the follower of Islam should have control over the city and that Israel has no right to claim ownership of any land in the country.

They view the Jews as foreign invaders who have come to steal the land that should be rightfully theirs, as if they were vile practitioners of colonialism looking to oppress the practitioners.

If this was an attempt to get Christians to side with him, the mayor certainly didn’t think through his plan, as there are very few believers who would side against the nation of Israel in such an important matter.

Believers should pray for God to bless Israel with a peaceful holiday season, and for the Christmas celebration in Nazareth to be a beautiful reminder of the birth of our Savior.
