While many states are ordering abortionists to close up shop to conserve supplies and slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, New York has unsurprisingly declared abortion is an “essential” medical procedure that must continue uninterrupted amid the pandemic.
At the outset of the coronavirus pandemic reaching America, U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advised healthcare facilities to reschedule all non-urgent appointments and elective procedures, prompting each state to take its own approach in determining what is “essential” and “non-essential” healthcare.
As for abortion, states such as Ohio and Texas have declared that abortion is non-essential, ordering all procedures to halt.
New York, however, has unsurprisingly taken the stance that abortions must not be impeded amid the pandemic.
“To be clear, the coronavirus is not an excuse for federal, state, or local governments to curtail women’s reproductive freedoms or limit their choices,” declared the state’s Attorney General, Letitia James, according to The Hill. “Any woman who wants to go into a doctor’s office or into a clinic today and get an abortion should continue to be able to do so.”
“And for those who do not feel comfortable leaving their homes as we battle COVID-19, we are fighting to maintain women’s access to abortion and the abortion pill so that their reproductive choices are not limited,” James continued, vowing to “do everything in my power to stop this attack on a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion.”
The progressive state’s stance hardly comes as a surprise. For nearly a year now, the state has had the most permissive abortion laws after removing abortion from its penal code, effectively codifying the “right” to abortion at any time up until birth.
New York, however, is merely following the lead of prestigious medical institutions like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), who declared that elective abortions are essential healthcare.
In a response to ACOG, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) stated that while “elective abortion is neither ‘essential’ nor ‘urgent,’” it “does consume critical resources such as masks, gloves, and other personal protective equipment, and unnecessarily exposes patients and physicians to pathogens.”
“Elective abortion, both surgical and drug induced, also generates more patients to be seen in already overburdened emergency rooms,” AAPLOG continued. “Most abortion providers instruct women to go to an emergency room if they have any concerning symptoms after the abortion. Approximately five percent of women who undergo medication abortions will require evaluation in an emergency room, most commonly for hemorrhage. Surgical abortions can also result in hemorrhage. Emergency room personnel – who are already struggling to meet the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic – will be further strained to provide care to these women.”
What does it say about a society that is willing to risk overwhelming the healthcare system in order to preserve the “right” to end the lives of preborn children? Lord, help us!
