A pro-life OBGYN recently shared in an interview that she has never had to abort a baby to save a mother’s life, lending her medical expertise to much confusion surrounding abortion bans and access to medical care for women.
Ever since Roe v. Wade was overturned earlier this year, the pro-abortion camp has perpetuated many misconceptions about what abortion restrictions and bans mean for women who suffer medical complications during pregnancy.
Dr. Christina Francis, the CEO-elect of the American Association of Pro-life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, recently told The Federalist in an interview that there are some cases in which a premature baby might need to be delivered to save the life of a mother — but the baby would never need to be intentionally killed.
Instead, both baby and mother can be cared for, and this is what she does as a medical doctor.
“Not only is this the ethical thing to do, and a fulfillment of our oath to do no harm, but it is also much faster than abortion and improves outcomes for the mother,” she explained. “Babies have survived as young as 21 and 22 weeks, as the age of viability continually changes thanks to medical science advances.”
“There is comfort for parents to know they gave their child a chance at life and comfort for physicians to know they are always seeking to save them both, if possible,” she explained.
She also addressed the oft-cited claim that abortion bans might prevent women from being able to receive medical care for ectopic pregnancies or miscarriages.
“There is a difference, legally and medically, between an abortion and treatment for miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy,” Francis explained. “Even Planned Parenthood recognized this difference, stating on its website that removing an ectopic pregnancy is not the same as an abortion (though they recently removed this statement in order to continue to spread false information).”
“An elective abortion is any procedure performed or medication given with the intent to end a pregnancy specifically by ending the life of the preborn child. This is not our intent when we treat a woman for an ectopic pregnancy or for a miscarriage,” she clarified.
