Ohio’s “Save Women’s Sports Act” Would Ban All Male-Born Athletes From Women’s School Teams

A pair of Ohio Republicans have proposed a bill that would stop all male-born student athletes from competing as females once and for all.

According to a statement from Rep. Jena Powell (R-Arcanum), HB 527, titled the “Save Women’s Sports Act,” would apply to “all public schools and colleges and any private schools or colleges that are members of a state or national athletic association.”

If passed into law, the bill would ensure that women are not “forced to compete against men playing on women’s sports teams,” requiring that male and female sports teams be based upon the biological sex of an individual.

“The Save Women’s Sports Act is a fairness issue for women,” said Powell. “This bill ensures that every little girl who works hard to make it on a podium is not robbed of her chance by a biological male competing against her in a biological female sport. We want every little girl to achieve her athletic dream here in the state of Ohio.”

Powell pointed to the Connecticut case in which two different biological males stole 15 championship titles that were previously held by nine different female athletes.

Neither Powell nor the bill’s co-sponsor, Rep. Reggie Stoltzfus (R-Paris Township) knew of a similar case in Ohio, which was all the more motivation to pass the bill as quickly as possible.

“The fact remains that one girl losing a spot to a male is one too many,” Stoltzfus said. “It’s unfair.”

“We want everyone in the state of Ohio to be able to compete,” said Powell. “The beauty of this bill is that we are including everyone in sports, and upholding the integrity of women’s sports.”

The statement also notes that the bill creates a process to resolve any disputes over a student’s sex and “respectfully accommodates those who have an intersex condition or disorder of sexual development to demonstrate they are, in fact, a female.”

As with similar bills proposed in other states, pro-transgender advocates are losing their minds in defense of the “right” of a male to compete as a female, such as TransOhio board member Lena Tenney who compared such situations to that of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.

The Ohio Dispatch noted that Phelps’ body produces half the normal amount of lactic acid (which is responsible for muscle fatigue) and that he has double-jointed ankles, giving his kicks “unusual range.”

“He’s an American sports hero, but trans kids can’t play on their middle school baseball team,” Tenney told The Dispatch.

How is that even remotely the same thing? A naturally-occuring anomaly in Phelps is not even close to the almost invariable physical advantage biological men over even the strongest woman, even after a year of hormone treatment.

“This is not about women trying harder or training more,” Citizens for Community Values’ attorney Rachel Citak told The Dispatch. “No matter how hard we train, women perform 10% slower across the board. That’s our physiological, biological reality.”

If you are an Ohioan, reach out to your representative now and urge them to support HB 527. While you’re at it, call Reps. Powell and Stoltzfus and thank them for this bill!!
