One-third of U.K. adults believe that pornography is an acceptable part of society while one-fifth say they’d consider pursuing a career in the pornography industry, according to a recent poll conducted for the anti-porn non-profit Naked Truth Project.

On the other hand, over one-half of those surveyed said they’d be concerned if someone in their family was creating pornographic content.

SkyNews reports that the Savanta ComRes survey asked 2,087 adults across the country about their views on pornography and being involved in the industry and the results were troubling.

“I believe that porn ruins lives, wrecks relationships. It can cause things like mental health problems, addiction, impotency,” said the group’s CEO Ian Henderson.

“So it may be accepted but it can’t be acceptable because people deserve much better than those things,” he noted.

“Someone once said that the problem with pornography is not that it shows us too much, but that it doesn’t actually show us enough. Behind the glamour is often exploitation, coercion, injustice,” he explained.

Joshua Broome, who made $1 million working in the porn industry before leaving, agrees.

“After making over $1m in the porn industry, travelling the world and many empty intimate encounters, I realised that none of the things that society paints as success brings true happiness,” he explained, according to the British outlet.

“I felt empty, used up and worthless. I discovered that peace is not found in things,” he continued.

“It led me to isolating myself to the point where I went an entire year without hearing my real name,” Broome also said. “So while on the outside looking in I had made all this money, fame and was on the cover of magazines, when I lay my head on the pillow I felt sad and empty and alone, and that caused me to have thoughts of self-harm.”

Broome now works in ministry and hopes to raise awareness about the damage of the porn industry.
