While many a devout Christian would balk at the idea that the Redeemer of all mankind had anything for which to repent, being the perfect Passover lamb who died for the sins of all mankind, a gay minister has gone viral after claiming that Jesus was forced to repent of his racism after being confronted by a Syrophoenician woman.
Progressive preacher Brandan Robertson, who identifies both as a Christian and a gay man, shared his views in a TikTok viral on the passage in Mark 7 in which Jesus refers to the woman indirectly as a “dog.”
In the eyes of Robertson, this was a “racial slur” for which only after the woman “spoke truth to power,” Jesus Christ, the personification of the Creator of the universe in the flesh, repented.

This is the passage he is referring to, Mark 7:24-30 (BSB):
A woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit soon heard about Jesus, and she came and fell at His feet. Now she was a Greek woman of Syrophoenician origin, and she kept asking Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
“First let the children have their fill,” He said. “For it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
Then Jesus told her, “Because of this answer, you may go. The demon has left your daughter.” And she went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.
This is Robertsons’ take, as reported by Disrn:
“Did you know that there’s a part of the Gospel of Mark where Jesus uses a racial slur?
In Mark chapter 7 there’s the account of the Syrophoenician woman. A woman who is Syrian and Greek, both of which there were strong biases against within the Jewish community.
And she comes to ask Jesus to heal her daughter who is possessed by a demon. And what is Jesus’ response? He says it’s not good for me to give the children’s food – meaning the children of Israel’s food – to dogs. He calls her a dog.
What’s amazing about this account is that the woman doesn’t back down. She speaks truth to power, she confronts Jesus and says, ‘Well you can think that about me but even dogs deserve the crumbs from the table.’
Her boldness and bravery to speak truth to power actually changes Jesus’ mind. Jesus repents of His racism and extends healing to this woman’s daughter.
I love this story because it’s a reminder that Jesus is human. He had prejudices and bias. And when confronted with it, He was willing to do His work. And this woman was willing to stand up and speak truth.”
In the progressive view of Christianity, which is being espoused by a growing number of unconventional yet popular “preachers” such as Robertson, Christ was merely a teacher we are meant to emulate, rather than the spotless, sinless, substitutionary atoning sacrifice for the sins of all mankind.
If Jesus Christ had refrained to heal her due to the region of her origin only to repent after being stood up to by a fallible human, He would not be capable of being this sacrifice and would be in need of its redemption Himself!
This is the definition of blasphemy.
Jesus Christ was human, as was necessary for His sacrifice. But to say He had anything for which to repent is to undermine the whole of His work on the cross, and thus, the entire foundation of Christian theology.
The Syrophoenician woman is just one of many humans in need of redemption found within the pages of scripture who displayed their great faith in Jesus’ perfect healing—it was not her “bravery” or “boldness” that saved her, but that she was not afraid to trust in the Lord even when he referred to her as a “dog.”
The Lord knew that her ethnicity was no match for His perfect mercy; He crafted her in her mothers’ womb as well as the child for whom she was seeking healing! He was on earth to satisfy her need for healing and salvation and grace.
It was not He who repented to her of racism, it was she who prostrated herself before Him displaying her trust in His power to redeem all mankind and not just the children of Israel. Jesus had known since before time itself He would be sent to die to save her and the whole world, regardless of their ethnicity.
Beware of those who are preaching another Gospel than the one you have heard and friends, the progressive Gospel, that diminishes the sinless perfection of Christ and thus His entire work on the cross, is not the Gospel of the Bible.
It is the Gospel of the world.
