Senator Josh Hawley’s “Parents Bill of Rights” Aims to Protect Schools From “Woke Bureaucrats”

Missouri Senator Josh Hawley has introduced a bill that would include a “Parents Bill of Rights” as part of pending law to fund education.

The bill would protect the rights of parents to attend school board meetings and review curricula and ensure that biometric data could not be collected and photos or videos taken of children on school grounds without parental consent.

“Parents will be empowered to sue schools that do not protect these rights for injunctive relief,” a press release from the Republican lawmaker explains. “A pattern of such violations in a particular jurisdiction will trigger major reductions in federal education funding.”

“America has long recognized the right of parents to direct their children’s education, but we are now seeing a concerted effort by the Left to shut parents out,” the statement reads.

The legislation comes as the debate over how much a parent should be involved in school administration has come to a head in the culture war.

Earlier this year, the National School Board Association issued an open letter (that has since caused at least 26 state member board associations to distance themselves from the national body) calling on the Biden administration to treat purported “threats” against school boards and teachers by angry parents as instances of domestic terrorism.

The Biden Department of Justice appears to have followed suit, as the following week, Attorney General Merrick Garland ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to work with local school administrators and law enforcement to address the “domestic terrorist” threat as thousands of law-abiding parents have been peacefully, but vocally, showing up at school board meetings to voice their objections to controversial school curricula.

“Whether it’s Joe Biden’s Justice Department attempting to classify parents as ‘domestic terrorists’ or activists funded by dark money who seek to quietly introduce critical race theory into school curricula, education has taken a back seat to radical politics in many schools, and parents are taking notice,” Hawley’s statement charges.

“It’s time to give control back to parents, not woke bureaucrats, and empower them to start a new era of openness in education,” he declared.
