Two people have reportedly died in Barcelona following a terror attack in which a van plowed through a crowd in a tourist-heavy area of the Spanish city.
According to The Mirror, at least 20 people are injured as a result of the attack, which took place on the iconic – and tourist-heavy – Las Ramblas street. Gunmen reportedly emerged from the vehicle and entered a Turkish restaurant nearby, taking hostages.
According to RTE.ie, the driver of the vehicle is believed to have fled the scene on foot. Little else is known about the individual at this time.
The New York Post, meanwhile, reports that local authorities are treating the incident as terror-related.
“There was a loud noise and everybody ran for cover,” The New York Post quotes one witness as stating. “There were a lot of people, lots of families, this is one of the most visited sites in Barcelona. I think several people were hit. It was horrible, there was panic. Terrible.”
