Last night in Chicago, activists gathered to defend life and make their voices heard outside a fundraising party for doctors that performed abortions. Among these doctors was the infamous abortionist Willie Parker, a self-proclaimed Christian who claims he is “doing the Lord’s work” by ripping human children from the wombs of their mothers.
In his new book, Life’s Work: A Moral Argument for Choice, he writes: “If you take anti-abortion rhetoric at face value, without knowing much about the Bible, you might assume that the antis have Scripture on their side. That’s how dominant and pervasive their righteous rhetoric has become. But they do not. The Bible does not contain the word ‘abortion’ anywhere in it.”
Sorry, Doc, it seems like you might be the one who doesn’t know much about the Bible.
Neither does Nicholas Kristof, a columnist for the New York Times, who happily echoes Parker’s bizarre argument, and quotes the abortionists’ famous line: “I believe that as an abortion provider, I am doing God’s work.”
Kristof writes, “If that seems incongruous, let’s remember that conservative Christianity’s ferocious opposition to abortion is relatively new in historical terms.” Um…what? Not true! Perhaps our ferocious opposition began because abortion was made legal in the United States!
He repeats the weak argument that the Bible “does not explicitly discuss abortion” and proceeds to state ignorantly that “there’s no evidence that Christians traditionally believed that life begins at conception.”
Parker, so quick to claim that providing abortions is his “ministry,” also has little respect for the Word of God:
“As an inspired document, the Bible is full of guidance for me about justice and love. But as a historical document, the Bible is a ruthless, unsparing record of the historic misogyny of the early Jewish and Christian people.”
He is conveniently trying to argue both that the Bible has no opinion on abortion, and also that the Bible is a brutal misogynistic document.This is a common view among secularists and typifies the “cherry picker” Christian, who likes the verses about being nice to other people but rejects the commandments of an absolute moral God. It’s so easy to cite the Bible when you want to quote “do not judge” out of context, and then turn around and denounce the same book for the commandment to stone homosexuals, and Parker is doing the same thing.
Both Parker and Kristof are severely misguided, or perhaps even outright deliberately deceptive, as abortion is clearly opposed to God’s word, and history proves it has been opposed by Christians since the foundation of our faith as well.
Life Site News put together an excellent refutation to this pathetic argument, writing:
“The early church was decidedly, vocally, and courageously pro-life and opposed to abortion….Both abortion and infanticide were common in the Roman Empire. Christians were forbidden to murder any child, born or unborn. The way of life honors the sanctity of life.”
Life Site News cites the writings of historical figures such as Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian, both who clearly advocated for life, and mentions that Athenagoras, Hippolytus, Basil the Great, Ambrose, Jerome, John Chrysostom, and Augustine were all decidedly pro-life.
This, of course, makes sense, because the Bible affirms that life begins in the womb, and that ending a life in the womb is a crime as well.
Psalm 139:13-14 reads “For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.” Job 31:15 and Psalm 22:10 also affirm that a baby in the womb is alive, and has a relationship with God.
God hand makes each and every precious human life in the womb, and this Psalm of David clearly affirms the ancient Biblical view of when life began.
Eric Scheidler, the president of Pro-Life Action League who organized the demonstration last night, feels the same way, but says it is not just a question of the Bible, but a question of science.
“Allowing children and women to be victimized by the brutality of abortion is about as far away from God’s plan as you can get,” he says, adding that there is also “no question that a fetus is a living human being, as science has repeatedly affirmed. The victims of abortion are our brothers and sisters—the little girl who will never take her first step, the little boy whose only baby picture is a sorrowful image on a pro-life poster. We all have an obligation to protect their fundamental right to life.”
