The Trump administration has announced sanctions against Chinese Communist Party officials believed to be involved in committing atrocious human rights abuses, including forced abortion to ensure population control, against the Uyghur people, a Muslim minority demographic within China.
In a press release issued on Thursday, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control outlined the sanctions against a Chinese Communist Party entity and four party officials “in connection with serious rights abuses against ethnic minorities” in Western China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, home to several million Uyghur people.
The release explains that the Chinese government officials were being designated “for their connection to serious human rights abuse against ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, which reportedly include mass arbitrary detention and severe physical abuse, among other serious abuses targeting Uyghurs, a Turkic Muslim population indigenous to Xinjiang, and other ethnic minorities in the region.”
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin declared that “the United States is committed to using the full breadth of its financial powers to hold human rights abusers accountable in Xinjiang and across the world.”
The State Department simultaneously issued its own statement on the sanctions against CCP members, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying that he was also designating the Chinese Communist Party’s Chen Quanguo, Zhu Hailun, and Wang Mingshan, and others “for their involvement in gross violations of human rights” against the Uyghurs and other minorities. The designations by the State Department mean that “they and their immediate family members are ineligible for entry into the United States.”
“The United States will not stand idly by as the [Chinese Communist Party] carries out human rights abuses targeting Uighurs, ethnic Kazakhs, and members of other minority groups in Xinjiang, to include forced labor, arbitrary mass detention, and forced population control, and attempts to erase their culture and Muslim faith,” said Pompeo.
Of Chen Quanguo, in particular, Pompeo noted that “before ramping up the CCP’s campaign of repression in Xinjiang, Chen oversaw extensive abuses in Tibetan areas, using many of the same horrific practices and policies CCP officials currently employ in Xinjiang.”
Late last month, AP reported that the CCP was looking to “slash birth rates among Uighurs and other minorities as part of a sweeping campaign to curb its Muslim population, even as it encourages some of the country’s Han majority to have more children.”
To accomplish this, the dictatorship continues to commit “demographic genocide” against the Muslim minority group.
The state regularly subjects minority women to pregnancy checks, and forces intrauterine devices, sterilization and even abortion on hundreds of thousands, the interviews and data show. Even while the use of IUDs and sterilization has fallen nationwide, it is rising sharply in Xinjiang.
The population control measures are backed by mass detention both as a threat and as a punishment for failure to comply. Having too many children is a major reason people are sent to detention camps, the AP found, with the parents of three or more ripped away from their families unless they can pay huge fines. Police raid homes, terrifying parents as they search for hidden children.
Since 2017, The Washington Examiner reports, as many as 2 million Uyghur people and other ethnic minorities in the region have been forced into concentration camps in Xinjiang where they are reportedly put through oppressive “deradicalization” programs—and this is but one facet of the Chinese Communist Party’s web of abuses against this people group.
Praise God for our government officials willing to stand against this horrific tyrrany! Though they may not be our brothers and sisters in worshiping the true and living God, we know the Uyghur people are still His image-bearers. Please join us in weeping and praying for their safety from this godless persecution and, if He is willing, for them to hear the saving word of God.
