UK Officials Call On United Nations To Investigate Chinese Uyghur Camps

International demands for the United Nations to investigate allegations of gruesome genocide of the Uyghur minority in China are increasing, with the United Kingdom joining the forefront.

According to the Financial Times, UK foreign secretary Dominic Raab is calling on UN investigators to demand urgent access to Uyghur internment camps in Xinjiang to confirm human rights abuses reportedly taking place in the Chinese province.

Human rights abuses against Uyghurs in China have reached an “industrial scale,” Raab declared, noting that he plans to address the UN human rights council on Monday to address abuses in China, Myanmar, Belarus, and Russia.

“The situation in Xinjiang is beyond the pale,” the foreign secretary said he plans to tell the council. “The reported abuses — which include torture, forced labour and forced sterilisation of women — are extreme and they are extensive. They are taking place on an industrial scale.”

Earlier this month, the BBC released a harrowing report detailing the systematic rape, sexual abuse, and torture in China’s “re-education” camps for Uyghurs within its Xinjiang autonomous region.

The totalitarian government of China and Hong Kong responded by banning BBC World Service and BBC News Weekly broadcasts for a year. The Global Times, a state-run Chinese publication, called the British broadcaster a “rumor mill” and a threat to “national security.”

“China’s decision to ban BBC World News in mainland China is an unacceptable curtailing of media freedom,” Raab said of the censorship. “China has some of the most severe restrictions on media and Internet freedoms across the globe and this latest step will only damage China’s reputation in the eyes of the world.”

Here in the United States, the Uyghur genocide was strongly condemned under the Trump administration.

“I believe this genocide is ongoing, and that we are witnessing the systematic attempt to destroy Uyghurs by the Chinese party-state,” said former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a statement last year. “The governing authorities of the second-most economically, militarily and politically powerful country on earth have made clear that they are engaged in the forced assimilation and eventual erasure of a vulnerable ethnic and religious minority group, even as they simultaneously assert their country as a global leader.”
