Tommy Dorfman, who starred in the graphic and highly controversial Netflix series “13 Reasons Why,” has come out as transgender and now lives and identifies as a woman.

Dorfman is keeping the name “Tommy,” but now plans to star in female roles and prefers the pronouns “she/her.”

“I’m thinking about how I can infuse my trans body into film and television,” the actor recently told Time Magazine in an interview. “Lena Dunham gave me my first role as a girl last year — it was so exciting and validating. And personally, it’s wild to be a 29-year-old going through puberty again. Some days I feel like I’m 14.”

“I view today as a reintroduction to me as a woman, having made a transition medically,” Dorfman also said. “Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out. Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman.”

The piece “Tommy Dorfman Would Like to Clarify” was accompanied by an Instagram post from the titular subject, which thanked Time magazine and the journalists who penned the piece.

“Thrilled to reintroduce myself as the woman i am today,” Dorfman wrote.

“Thank you, @time, for this space, @torreyadora for writing this story, and @gizellehernandez for these images.”

“I’m especially grateful to every single trans person who walked this path, broke down barriers, and risked their lives to live authentically and radically as themselves before me. thank you to all the trans woman that showed me who i am, how to live, celebrate myself, and take up space in this world.”

The program for which Dorfman is best known, “13 Reasons Why,” centers around a teenage girl who kills herself and in addition to the grim, violent topics surrounding suicide, rape, and sexuality, was also blamed for a number of copycat suicides among teens.

Netflix has consistently refused to pull the series.

Dorfman is the latest celebrity to update their gender identity publicly; earlier this year, pop star Demi Lovato came out as gender non-binary while “Juno” star Ellen Page came out as transgender and now identifies as a man, Elliot.
