A clip of a crying child being removed from a New York restaurant went viral last week as social media users reacted to the reality of one of the country’s strictest COVID-19 vaccination policies.
In the video, officers of NYPD surrounded patrons that had not presented proof of their vaccination status, telling them they needed to leave or they’d be arrested for trespassing.
“Unless you have vaccination cards, you have to exit the restaurant. If you leave voluntarily, you will not have charges pressed against you. Otherwise, you will be arrested for trespass. This will be your only warning,” one officer tells the family.
A little boy who began to cry, clinging to his mother, attracted attention on Twitter.
What a lovely new world we are living in when you go out for a meal and a squad of police barge in, persecute a little boy then demand to see everyone else’s papers. This is the vax passport world so many are begging for. #NotAboutAVirus #NOVAXPASSPORTS pic.twitter.com/ZQFnybs4ly

According to Newsweek, the video was taken at an Applebee’s in Queens, and although it is unclear when, a spokesperson for the NYPD told the outlet that several people entered the establishment without masks on December 15 and would not show their vaccination cards.
“Upon arrival, officers were informed by the manager that individuals entered, refused to prove vaccination status in compliance with NYS Mandate and requested for the individuals to be removed from the location,” the police spokesperson said.
Four people were arrested.
The mother and child pictured in the video, however, were not.
