While leftists in high and low places continue their attempts to secularize Christmas and eradicate any mention of its very namesake from the holiday, President Donald Trump just gave us all a reverent reminder of the reason for the season.
On Thursday night, alongside First Lady Melania Trump, the President led the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony with an explanation of the tradition’s faithful origins.
“In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge lit the first National Christmas tree,” Trump said, according to a transcript from the White House. “Later that night, African-American community centers held an outdoor worship service on these grounds, and during that service the Washington Monument was illuminated with a beautiful cross, a powerful reminder of the meaning of Christmas.”
As he commenced the lighting of the 30-foot evergreen tree, the president pointed to the story of Jesus’ birth as told in the gospels of Matthew and Luke.
“More than two thousand years ago, a brilliant star shone in the east,” he said. “Wise men traveled far and they came and they stood under the star where they found the Holy Family, in Bethlehem,” President Trump added.
“As the Bible tells us, when the wise men had come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshipped Him,” he continued. “Christians give thanks that the Son of God came into the world to save humanity,” he said. “Jesus Christ inspires us to love one another with hearts full of generosity and grace.”
In what could have perhaps have been a subtle nod of affirmation after their abandonment by Chick-fil-A, President Trump also praised the Salvation Army. He also gave much-deserved praise to our military service members and other volunteers who serve American families during the season. “Each year through their Angel Tree program, the Salvation Army brings new gifts to more than 600,000 children,” he said of the charity.
“At Christmas, we remember this eternal truth: Every person is a beloved child of God,” Trump said at the end of the ceremony. “As one grateful nation, we praise the joy of family, the blessings of freedom, and the miracle of Christmas.”
“On behalf of Melania and our entire family, Merry Christmas, and God bless you all,” he concluded.
Watch the President’s incredible speech:
We should be thankful that we live in a nation in which the miracle of God’s gift of His Son is proudly proclaimed in the public square. Still, we must not be satisfied with a mere profession of faith.
We must call on our leaders at every level to abandon compromise and live out their faith in their service to their country and honor our Constitution’s foundation in God’s law and truth. Jesus is at the core of the truth of the Bible, and if our leaders can be bold enough to profess His name on national television, they can let His Word govern their execution of the law!
