Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce, has expressed opposition to the nationwide trend of affirming transgender student participation in school sports according to gender identity rather than biological sex.
Jenner, whose transition from male to female in 2015 grabbed global attention and arguably sparked a wave of transgender trends, made the statement on Saturday according to TMZ.
The former Olympian runner who is now running as a Republican for governor of California made the statement as several red states are proposing or passing legislation to keep female-identifying transgender students out of girls’ sports and vice versa.
“This is a question of fairness, that’s why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls’ sports in school,” Jenner told the outlet. “It just isn’t fair, and we have to protect girls’ sports in our schools.”
According to Fox News, Jenner is running in hopes of ousting incumbent Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is facing an upcoming recall election.
Jenner’s statement comes as Florida’s legislature finally passed a bill barring anyone who was not born female from competing in girls’ sports. Gov. Ron De Santis, a Republican, has indicated plans to sign the bill.
Over 30 states have proposed or passed legislation in the interest of protecting girls’ and women’s sports in public schools and colleges, arguing that biological males have an irrevocable physical advantage over girls regardless of whether or not they are receiving hormone treatments or have had surgery.
On the other hand, a report by TransAthlete indicates that 16 states currently “have friendly policies that help facilitate full inclusion of trans/non-binary/GNC (gender non-conforming) students in high school athletics.”
These states include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington State, and Washington, D.C.
